Beringharjo, as I believe it is the largest and oldest traditional
market in Yogyakarta as it has started its activity since 1758 (
source), provides like the whole things from A to Z *I guess* hehe
Beringharjo market is very close to main tourism spots in
Yogyakarta, which are Malioboro, Fort Vredeburg, Alun-Alun Utara, and Keraton
Yogyakarta (Sultan’s Palace).

Batik area in Beringharjo Market |
It is my favorite place to shop, since I could find anything
way way cheaper here than the other shop like shoes, clothes, jamu (Javanese
traditional herbal), and the most famous one, BATIK.
You know there are so many kind of Batik from many regions
in Indonesia, that actually Beringharjo has them all. The best of the best here
you can bargain almost all item’s price! Example: the seller ask for 50,000 for
an item, and you can magically own that item for only 25,000 or less! Yes, the
power of bargaining in traditional market is still exist until now, like what I
always did.
But if you are looking for one luxurious item, well, I won’t
recommend you to shop in Beringharjo, since it’s people’s market so it’s kinda
rare to find one luxuriously expensive items.
Lemme tell a bit about what inside this market. In the very
front of this place, you’ll find some ladies selling foods such pecel (like
salad ala Javanese with spinach, carrot, bean sprouts, beans etc with
coconut+peanut+palm_sugar sauce), bakmi (noodle); that even bakmi-pecel is so
famous since 1950’s as it’s my mum’s favorite meal since she was in elementary
school (she’s now almost 60yo) J And there’s a lot more foods available there, cheap but not
in the top hygiene I say. It’s placed close to the road with fumes, dust, etc
and sometimes the seller doesn’t really cover the food well.
That’s outside. Inside, we have so so many Batik collections
with so many motives and models for both man and women. Then, there’re wedding complementary,
accessories in dozens that are very affordable, shoes, herbs, bags, and many
more!
